Workington is an ancient market and industrial town, located on the west coast of Cumbria, historical to the coal, iron and steel industries.

With a population of approximately 25,000, today, the major industry to the area is the nearby Sellafield nuclear site at Seascale, the largest employer by far locally.

The town lies astride the River Derwent, with the Solway Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) to the north and the Lake District National Park inland to the east.

The regeneration of the area includes Washington Square, a £50 million shopping and mixed use complex in the centre of the town.  It is the main shopping centre for west Cumbria with Dunmail Park and Derwent Drive Retail Park also providing plenty of retail therapy.

Transport links are provided by the A66 to the east and A595 north to Carlisle and south to Whitehaven.
